Recognising Embedded Words in Connected Speech: Context and Competition
Onset-embedded words (e.g. cap in captain) present a problem for accounts of spoken word recognition since information coming after the offset of the embedded word may be required for identification. We demonstrate that training a simple recurrent network to activate a representation of all the words in a sequence allows the network to learn to recognise onset-embedded words without requiring a...
متن کاملProcessing and transcribing spontaneous speech
This paper deals with spontaneous speech, considering first its specificities, and then its transcription – both diachronically and synchronically. The paper continues by listing the main problems spontaneous speech causes to automatic speech recognition systems, which were identified through several experiments. It ends by suggesting some optimizations to help solve these problems. MOTS-CLÉS :...

This paper explores issues emerging in education as contemporary learners find more powerful alternatives to traditional classroom learning. Learning in the 21st century should be connected, engaged, relevant and challenging. 21st century learners are offered multiple ways to task. They can create weblogs and access people via SMS (short message service), send photos on mobile phones, communica...
متن کاملTranscribing Speech: Errors in Corpora and Experimental Settings
Administrations, government organs, judiciary courts always faced the problem of defining limits in transcription practices. Nowadays corpus linguistics and computational linguistics have focused their attention on spoken corpora as indispensable tools for descriptive linguistics, as well as for applied purposes (in speech technologies, such as text-to-speech and speech recognition, in dialogue...
متن کاملTranscribing continuous speech using mismatched crowdsourcing
Mismatched crowdsourcing derives speech transcriptions using crowd workers unfamiliar with the language being spoken. This approach has been demonstrated for isolated word transcription tasks, but never yet for continuous speech. In this work, we demonstrate mismatched crowdsourcing of continuous speech with a word error rate of under 45% in a large-vocabulary transcription task of short speech...
